Important Safety Update: New Mandatory Standard for Toppling Furniture (Effective May 2025)
As part of our commitment to customer safety and regulatory compliance, we want to inform you about a new Australian product safety regulation that will come into effect on 4 May 2025: the Consumer Goods (Toppling Furniture) Information Standard 2024.
While all of our products are commercial-grade and built for use in professional offices and commercial workspaces, we understand that many of our customers may also purchase these items for home offices or residential environments. If this applies to you, please take a moment to review the information below.
🛠️ What Is the New Regulation?
The regulation has been introduced by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) to reduce the risk of injury or death from furniture tip-over incidents, especially involving children.
The standard applies to certain freestanding furniture over 686mm in height, including:
-
Bookcases and storage units
-
Entertainment units
-
Hall tables, sideboards, buffets, and display cabinets
Even if the product is purchased for commercial use, if it's reasonably foreseeable that it may be used in a domestic setting, these rules still apply.
✅ What We're Doing at Elite Office Furniture
To ensure full compliance with the new safety regulation, we have worked closely with all our suppliers, manufacturers, and factories to implement the required changes across all affected product lines.
Here's what’s being done to meet the new standard:
-
For products manufactured after 4 May 2025:
-
A permanent safety warning label will be pre-affixed to the product at the time of manufacturing.
-
A clearly visible external warning label will be applied to the product packaging.
-
A wall anchoring kit will be included with each unit.
-
Updated assembly instructions will include the required safety and anchoring information.
-
-
For existing stock produced before this date, our suppliers have:
-
Supplied anchoring kits and warning labels which we are now including inside the packaging prior to dispatch.
-
Provided updated documentation to meet the new compliance standards.
-
-
If your delivery is missing an anchoring kit or safety label, we will provide a replacement free of charge. Simply contact our customer service team at customerservice@eliteofficefurniture.com.au and we’ll arrange immediate dispatch.
🧠 What You Need to Know as a Customer
We care deeply about your safety and encourage all customers — particularly those placing furniture in residential settings — to take the following precautions:
-
Always anchor applicable furniture to the wall, especially in homes with children
-
Follow the included safety instructions
-
Inspect packaging upon delivery and notify us immediately if safety materials are missing
Please note:
If a customer chooses not to anchor furniture in a residential setting, or does not inform us that a required anchor kit was missing, we cannot accept liability for any resulting tip-over incidents.
